Vintage Large Persian Gabbeh/Qashqai-Family Tribal Rug
$3,100.00
A striking vintage Persian tribal rug from the Gabbeh/Qashqai weaving tradition of southern Iran, distinguished by its bold, beautifully restrained composition and wonderfully expressive folk imagery.
The rug features a rich warm red field framed by deep blue stepped geometric forms, with a dramatic vertical procession of colorful diamond-shaped medallions running through the center. Within the medallions are charming stylized animals and birds, reflecting the pastoral world and visual vocabulary of the nomadic and semi-nomadic weavers of southern Persia.
Hand-knotted in wool, the rug has the substantial, tactile character associated with Gabbeh and related Qashqai-family weaving. The deliberately geometric drawing, subtle irregularities, saturated color and whimsical animal imagery give the piece tremendous personality. Rather than following the rigid formality of workshop carpets, its design has the spontaneous quality prized in genuine Persian tribal weaving.
The palette is especially appealing, combining deep red, indigo and blue with ivory, green, gold and other earthy accents. Variations in tone and drawing contribute to the rug's authentic handmade character.
At approximately 8'7" × 11'4", this is an unusually large and highly decorative example—substantial enough to anchor a living room, library, dining room or large bedroom while retaining the warmth and individuality of a traditional tribal textile.
