19th Century Persian, Afghan or Central Asian Hammered Copper-Alloy Cauldron with Massive Wrought-Iron Bail

Impressive 19th-century Persian, Afghan or Central Asian hammered copper-alloy cooking cauldron, distinguished by its substantial proportions, richly worked surface, and exceptionally heavy hand-forged wrought-iron bail handle.

The vessel is traditionally formed from hammered copper alloy, its surface retaining the irregularities, tool marks, oxidation, and warm variegated patina associated with generations of hand manufacture and practical use. The broad rounded body and reinforced rim are complemented by a monumental iron swing handle, attached through robust integral lugs and forged for carrying the vessel over a hearth or open fire.

Large cauldrons of this type were important utilitarian objects throughout Persia, Afghanistan and the wider Central Asian region, where they were employed for communal cooking and the preparation of rice, stews, meat dishes, and other foods for extended households, gatherings, and celebrations. Their considerable size and weight also made them durable household possessions capable of remaining in use for generations.

Particularly appealing today as an example of 19th-century Islamic and Central Asian domestic metalwork, the cauldron possesses a strongly sculptural presence. The contrast between the softly burnished, time-worn copper-alloy body and the dark, heavily forged iron handle gives the piece considerable decorative character.
