Substantial American Spanish Revival Hanging Lantern
Item only offered for shipping within California.
Impressive American Spanish Colonial Revival / Spanish Revival hanging lantern, dating to approximately the 1920s–1930s and likely produced in Southern California, where Spanish Revival architecture and custom wrought-iron lighting flourished during the period.
At approximately 31 inches, this is a substantially large and architecturally commanding example. The lantern is constructed of substantial hand-worked wrought iron, incorporating twisted iron elements, scrolling strapwork, individually formed foliate decoration, hammered details and ornamental ball terminals.
Especially attractive is the surviving aged gilt/brass-toned finish over the dark iron, which has developed a rich, naturally worn patina. Period manufacturers offered wrought-iron fixtures with brass-plated and similarly antiqued finishes, making the surviving surface an important part of the lantern's character. It has not been aggressively polished or refinished.
The lantern retains colored/textured glass panels, which produce a warm atmospheric appearance when illuminated. Its heavy suspension hardware and distinctive hand-worked chain feature irregular hammered and faceted links appropriate to the substantial scale of the fixture.
The craftsmanship, scale and decorative vocabulary are characteristic of the high-quality architectural ironwork produced for Spanish Colonial Revival residences and estates in California during the 1920s and 1930s. While Southern California manufacture is strongly suggested by the style, no maker attribution is being claimed.
The electrical components appear to have been updated/replaced at some point, and as with any antique lighting fixture, professional inspection before installation is recommended.
A dramatic piece of early California-style architectural lighting, ideally suited to a Spanish Revival, Mediterranean, Monterey, Mission or historic California interior.
