Antique Uzbek Lakai-Related Textile

$3,950.00

Exceptional large antique Central Asian embroidered textile, attributed to the Lakai or Lakai-related textile tradition of Uzbekistan, probably dating to the late 19th or early 20th century.

Measuring approximately 55 x 85 inches, this impressive textile is distinguished by its exceptionally dense, colorful embroidery and elaborate construction. The dark central sections are covered with intricate polychrome embroidery incorporating large scrolling boteh/palmette forms, stylized flowers and vigorous vegetal ornament.

Particularly interesting is the textile's composite construction. It has been assembled from multiple textile sections rather than being made from a single uninterrupted piece. The embroidered panels are combined with contrasting woven elements and a substantial red quilted satin/silk-like surround, creating an unusually rich and highly decorative overall composition.

The reverse reveals the seams and construction of the individual components and shows the embroidery worked through the underlying fabric. Multi-panel construction is well documented among antique Uzbek and Lakai embroideries.

The combination of densely worked embroidery, brilliant color, dark ground and boldly conceived ornament is characteristic of textiles associated with the Lakai/Shakhrisyabz textile tradition of southern Uzbekistan.
