Large traditional tinned-copper kazan / cooking cauldron, probably Ottoman Turkish or Ottoman Balkan, 19th century, with hand-forged iron bail and suspension fittings.

An impressive and highly decorative large antique tinned-copper kazan, dating to the 19th century and most likely originating in Ottoman Turkey or the Ottoman Balkans.

Traditionally used for preparing substantial quantities of food for extended households, celebrations, religious gatherings, and community feasts, vessels of this scale were important pieces of domestic and communal life throughout the Ottoman world.

The cauldron is fashioned from heavy copper with a traditional tinned interior, complemented by a substantial hand-forged iron bail handle and forged suspension fittings. The contrast between the warm, beautifully aged copper surface and dark hand-worked iron gives the piece tremendous character.

Particularly appealing is the wonderful old surface and naturally developed patina, showing the irregularities, wear and traces of use expected from a genuinely utilitarian vessel of considerable age. The hand-forged hardware and traditional construction give it a strong sculptural presence.

Today, a kazan of this scale makes an exceptional decorative statement piece—equally striking displayed beside a fireplace, in a large kitchen, wine cellar or entryway, or repurposed as an architectural planter or centerpiece.
