Ángel Alonso (1923–1994) – Large Abstract Figural on Arches Paper – Signed – 30 × 22 in.
Striking large-format abstract figural work attributed to Ángel Alonso (1923–1994), the Spanish-born artist who spent much of his career working in France.
Executed in saturated shades of violet, purple, crimson, magenta and black, the composition presents an expressive abstracted human figure defined through broad gestural passages and strong curvilinear forms. The combination of figurative imagery and abstraction gives the work a particularly powerful presence.
The painting is executed on a full sheet of French Arches Aquarelle artist's paper, measuring approximately 30 × 22 inches (76 × 56 cm). The sheet retains its characteristic deckled edges, together with the “AQUARELLE ARCHES” blind embossment and “ARCHES FRANCE” manufacturer's identification.
The work is prominently signed “Angel Alonso” along the lower edge.
Alonso was known for his sustained investigation of color, pigment, texture and unconventional supports. His works encompass painting, gouache and mixed-media compositions on paper, cardboard, wood and canvas.
