Antique Northwest Persian Tribal Animal Rug
Caucasian influence, c. 1920.
Appealing antique hand-knotted Northwest Persian tribal rug, dating approximately to the early 20th century, circa 1900–1940. Generously sized at 67" × 111" (approximately 5'7" × 9'3").
The ivory field features three large stepped geometric medallions in warm salmon, rust and cream tones, surrounded by a wonderful assortment of stylized animals, birds and traditional tribal motifs. Multiple geometric borders in deep blue, rust, green, brown and ivory frame the composition.
The design displays a particularly strong Caucasian-influenced tribal vocabulary, although the construction and overall character are consistent with Northwest Persian weaving. The abundance of small animal and bird figures gives the rug considerable folk-art appeal and makes it especially decorative.
Hand-knotted wool construction with attractive age and character throughout. The rug has survived with older restoration to the ends and side selvages, including reconstructed/replacement fringe and areas of re-overcasting. Additional age-related wear and irregularities are present as expected for an antique tribal weaving. Please examine photographs carefully for condition.
A beautiful large-format tribal rug with a particularly engaging pictorial field—equally suitable for a collection or as a statement piece in an interior.
