Antique Bodhi Seed Mala

Beautiful vintage Buddhist mala prayer necklace featuring approximately 108 polished, reddish-brown beads, traditionally associated with Buddhist meditation and prayer.

Originally strung with a bold patina on 108 small, dark Phoenix Eye Bodhi beads with a red hue, each one worn smooth by time and touch, this mala holds the kind of weight that only years of prayer and practice can impact. Macro photos reveal why they are called "Eye" beads.

Bodhi Seeds are revered by spiritual practitioners across the Himalayas. In Sanskrit, Bodhi means "awakening," or "enlightenment," and it was under the Bodhi tree that the Buddha first attained enlightenment. These sacred seeds are not just symbolic, they're believed to carry the spiritual essence of wisdom itself.

The beads display warm shades of reddish-orange, chestnut, and deep brown, with distinctive natural-looking grooves, subtle wrinkles, small surface depressions, and irregular dark markings. Their smooth, gently polished surfaces give the necklace a richly textured appearance.

Several beads exhibit unusual concentric bands and small clusters of pits, adding visual character and suggesting a botanical seed or nut material. The variation in color and surface texture gives the strand an appealing organic quality.

The necklace includes traditional corded construction and an attached bronze counting strand or ornament, consistent with Buddhist prayer-bead arrangements.

In Buddhist practice, a mala of 108 beads is traditionally used for counting mantra recitations, prayers, and meditation repetitions. Such necklaces are appreciated for their spiritual associations, craftsmanship, and decorative appeal.
