Zazpiak Bat means The seven are one, referring to The seven Basque regions. The piece displays extensive evidence of traditional hand fabrication, with a richly textured surface created by repeated hammering and working of the metal rather than modern machine production.

The gong has a wonderfully sculptural appearance, with irregularities in the surface and finish that give it considerable character. The hand-hammered face catches the light beautifully and emphasizes the craftsmanship involved in forming such a substantial piece. The visible maker’s signature adds particular interest and distinguishes it from the many unsigned decorative gongs encountered on the market.

Its form and construction are consistent with the long Basque tradition of hand-forged and hand-hammered metalwork. Whether originally intended as a functional sounding gong or as a decorative artisan piece, it makes an impressive statement and has strong appeal as Basque folk art, European metalwork, or architectural décor.

Details:

Basque / Northern Spanish origin or tradition

Signed Lhasbe

Hand-hammered and hand-worked metal construction

Substantial scale

Attractive naturally aged surface and patina

Excellent decorative and sculptural presence

Unusual signed example

A distinctive piece of traditional European metal craftsmanship, particularly well suited to a collection of Basque or Spanish folk art, artisan metalwork, or as a dramatic wall-mounted decorative object.

https://rothschildcollection.com/products/antique-signed-basque-zazpiak-bat-copper-dinner-gong-c-1900-1920
