Graceful deer move through the garden while birds appear among flowering branches and foliage, creating a composition filled with movement and visual interest.

The imagery is also rich in traditional Chinese symbolism. Deer are closely associated with longevity, prosperity and official emolument, while birds, flowers and garden imagery evoke the beauty and abundance of the natural world. Together they create an auspicious composition intended to convey harmony, happiness and good fortune.

The rug's charmingly stylized drawing is particularly characteristic of Baotou weaving from Inner Mongolia, whose carpets are admired for their distinctive interpretation of classical Chinese decorative motifs. Subtle irregularities in the animals, vegetation and spacing lend the composition the appealing spontaneity of a genuinely handwoven textile.

Details

Chinese Baotou rug

Inner Mongolia, China

Hand-knotted wool pile

Lively pictorial garden composition

Deer and bird motifs

Flowering plants and stylized foliage

Traditional auspicious Chinese symbolism

Distinctive hand-drawn character

Highly decorative and collectible

An especially appealing example of Chinese pictorial carpet weaving, combining the decorative charm of a garden landscape with layers of traditional symbolism.
